SUBJECT 07 - NOT OF THIS EARTH
For as long as I can remember, I have carried a persistent sense of isolation, a quiet feeling that I didn’t quite belong in the world around me. I often found myself retreating inward, seeking comfort and escape in the boundless landscapes of my imagination. Books, films, writing, and drawing, any creative outlet that allowed me to construct alternate realities where I could feel safe, seen, and unbound by the rules of everyday life.
Science fiction became my sanctuary. I was mesmerised by the galaxies of Star Wars, the interstellar diplomacy of Star Trek, and every depiction of cosmic wonder I could find. What captivated me most was the idea that there might be something, someone, beyond Earth. The possibility that we are not alone in the universe gave me hope, made the world feel wider, and reassured me that somewhere out there, there could be a place where I truly belong.
One of my deepest connections with my father is our mutual fascination with space, conspiracy theories, and the unknown. We have spent countless evenings poring over books, watching documentaries, and engaging in speculative conversations that dance between science and myth. Our favourite, without question, has been *Unacknowledged* by Dr Steven M. Greer, a work that explores classified UFO encounters, government cover-ups, and the potential for advanced extraterrestrial intelligence far beyond what we have been led to believe. It challenged our perceptions, fuelled our curiosity, and made the mystery feel deeply personal.
So, when I was asked to create a final project about myself, a body of work that encapsulates who I am and what I want to express through my art, I knew I needed to honour this part of me. This isn’t just about aliens or space; it’s about the emotional journey of growing up feeling alienated and the strange comfort I found in otherworldly ideas.
This fashion story is my love letter to the universe that gave me solace. It is a visual manifestation of my journey, from a child hidden in the corners of my mind to someone ready to emerge, transformed and radiant. Each image will represent a step in my emotional evolution: from isolation and inwardness to awakening and transcendence. I want my work to speak not just of who I was but also of who I am becoming, someone unafraid to shine, imagine, and believe in the beauty of the unseen.
